Hi Clay, I really enjoy your podcast and appreciate you taking the time to help spread great information and ideas. This specific podcast was no exception, however, I was left pondering an important question. How does a person go about finding land or cattle herds that may be available for lease? It seems here in Central Wyoming this type of information is spread mostly on a word-of-mouth basis making it difficult for someone without extensive contacts in the area to take advantage of these opportunities. Are there resources available for finding these leases or do you or Aaron have any suggestions that may help a person find them?
Brandon! That is a great question. One strategy that I have heard works well for others is to look for what appears to be under-utilized pieces of land and try to find out who owns them and contact that person directly to see if there is an opportunity to lease that land. This is actually one strategy employed by a person in Wyoming the majority, if not the totality, of whose operation is run on leased land.
Other opportunities might be found through a local lending institution. Go in and express interest in leasing a ranch. They may know of an aging rancher looking to keep the land as a working ranch.
I hope to get the aforementioned individual on in the near future for an episode about his strategy and its benefits.
Thanks again for reaching out! Feel free to email me through the workingcows.net/contact page and we can maybe set a chance to discuss this further over the phone.
