Steve Kenyon of Greener Pastures Ranching in Busby, AB, CA joined me to discuss his recent article for Canadian Cattlemen. In this article he challenged the paradigm that unconsumed feed in bale grazing is a waste.

If bale grazing a hay feild, how long does it take left over hay to break down? How long before you can cut Hay in that feild after bale grazing?
The response I have gotten from people who bale graze on a hay field is that year 1 you might have to leave the cutter bar up a little to go over some of the hay that is left over, but it will eventually break down and by year 2 will probably be undetectable. Another key factor is that the cows will clean up better quality forage (hay).
