Good Monday morning to all you critter and land loving folks. We have been super blessed with moisture so far this spring, and I think that officially means it is mud season for many of us! Makes for interesting days, and some dirty kids, but they love it, and it washes. The Conry ranch is busy with calving season and the extra chores that go with it. Thursday afternoon Clay and my father in law got away for an afternoon with Derek Schwanebeck to ride out on some pasture land for some a meeting of the minds. They had a good time and its always great to network and have fresh eyes on your operation. If you are new to the working cows podcast site, give a listen to Clay’s interview with Derek back on episode 9, and a little spoiler alert…Derek sat down for another chat with Clay while he was up here, stay tuned.
We made what I am hoping was our last run for hay, before we green up and can start our rotational grazing around our home. I have been hanging close to home as I can hardly wait for our Jersey cow Mocha to have her baby, so excited!!! We have all but two of our other heifers left to calve, sure is fun to see all the babies this time of year. We are now up to six bum lambs on the funny farm, as word on the street has gotten out that I am a sucker for anything that needs a momma. They are pretty darn cute and have been thriving on goat milk. Lastly this week we sold our four baby goats, weaned and ready for their new homes. Our kids are now feeling the money burn a hole in their pockets and can hardly wait for a trip to spend some of it. They were told one nice thing and the rest has to go in the bank, I thought they would be a little sadder, but the goats all went to people we know, and a big fat check when you are a kid that likes to shop isn’t a sad day. I hope ultimately they learned that we take good care of our animals to provide good stock to those looking to buy, and a little hard work pays off in the end. Sure we will be making a trip to cash those checks today, blessings to you, yours, and your operation.
