Good Monday morning to all you critter and land loving folks. This past week we have enjoyed some very spring like weather. The nice weather also put the coyotes on the move, and we lost a few yearling lambs. Total bummer. Most of the year our flock can be found running in Premier One brand net fencing. This stuff is pretty amazing, in four years I have only lost one lamb out of this netting, I imagine it was an aerial predator. In the winter we usually settle for a triple strand of hot wire due to lambs being sold, and the frozen ground. I think the reason we found more pressure this winter is because we moved further from the house. We will have to resituate and move the smaller lambs back closer to the house, the dog, and the barn yard light. It’s usually a learning curve to see what will work with livestock and the predators in any operation, we thankfully haven’t had many issues. So, circling back to the net fence, that is my plug for this Monday. Yes, it takes time, effort, and it probably isn’t for large scale operations of sheep, or country that is super brushy…also it may raise your blood pressure a few times if it gets tangles, but overall I am impressed. We run our net off a portable solar Stafix charger, you know if you have failed to turn this equipment off and touch the net…like yelp, and have a sore elbow the next day…this may be a first- hand account. This net also allowed us to run in some pretty crazy places during drought. We would run across a dry creek bed to fingers on the creek, some of which I am sure hadn’t been grazed in decades, it really helped us utilize our property and get by. If you are looking at getting into the sheep industry on a small scale or as an opportunity for kids, I highly recommend investing in this fencing.
Blessings to you, yours, and your operation.
